Result List

The default view for displaying results in Perceptive Search is the Result List. When you have performed a query in Perceptive Search, the Result List displays a list of files that contain your search terms.

1. Search Result Items

This window contains the main file list. You can customize the information displayed in the list of files by using the Customize Columns dialog.

Clicking on a column header will sort the Result List by that heading. You can also change the way results are displayed by sorting, filtering, removing results or querying within results.

2. Preview Pane

The bottom window contains a preview of the selected document, which is a quick preview rendition to help you decide whether you want to open it in the Perceptive Search Document Browser.

3. Refine Results

This panel, known as the Refine Tree, displays Categories and Entities and Metadata which have been automatically generated by Perceptive Search, however, both are customizable.

Categories

Double click on a category name to drill-down and see results only for that category, or double-click on "[All Items]" to see all categories again. This panel is only shown if you have categories enabled for your index.

Entities

The twenty most frequent entities in each class are shown. The entities may include people, organizations, locations, email addresses and websites, and have been automatically generated by Perceptive Search, or augmented with system administrator configuration. You can right-click on an entity to drill-down or display additional properties. Within the body of the document, entities are identified by a dotted line, and additional information is displayed when you position the mouse pointer over an entity.

Entities are automatically generated by Perceptive Search. Because Perceptive Search is computer software and not a person, sometimes it will present something as a possibly valid entity which you know to be incorrect. Perceptive Search entity recognition is designed to be "non-judgemental", in that it should never apply a value judgement in deciding not to show you something. You can right-click on an entity and select "Remove This Entity", in which case you are telling Perceptive Search that what it has identified as a possible entity, in fact is not.

Metadata

The metadata section shows the metadata items are being collated and available for search refinement. This information is generated automatically from the index.

Not all metadata is available for search refinement, Perceptive Search will analyze the index to identify the metadata fields that can be used for search refinement. For a metadata field to be considered, it must meet the following requirements:

  1. Fields Occurrences - The field must be present in at least a minimum number of documents, this is defaulted to 65%.
  2. Minimum Values - The field must have at least this number of unique values to be considered, this is defaulted to 5% of the number of documents in the index.
  3. Maximum Values - The field must not exceed this number of unique values to be considered, this is defaulted to 25% of the number of documents in the index.

4. Word List

This window displays the words and phrases used in your query, including Common Words, wildcards, conflated words, synonyms etc. The number of hits is displayed next to each term, with the final number displayed at the end of the list. Double-clicking on a term in the right-hand window will perform a search on only that term.
